Our Leading Release of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Premier Position.

On the surface, this work may look more like a challenging university examination rather than the latest popular music record by a musician whose last hit featured an international pop icon. Split into four distinct sections and performed in 13 languages, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged work investigating female mystique, religious ascent, and bodily transformation, frequently by way of the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme handled with raw openness elsewhere—is launched upwards on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a full orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter among a vast list of collaborators. Its sheer daring alone renders the efforts of other artists seem rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

That Lux manages to escape overly academic chin-stroking is nearly a miracle, with complete credit belonging to Rosalía. While it's not the first time project to fuse historical sounds and modern styles, the stakes feel far greater here, and the balancing act more precarious. What truly elevates this fourth album, outside of its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is an essential spirit of playfulness. Similar to the legendary Björk during her height, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls the listener into its tornado. When she's tearing your heart apart, you still desire to be right there through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant spirit comes forth brightly during the stunning piano-led ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Then, everything drops silent, and there's a gleeful giggle and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string surge thuds in with cartoonish impact. The track immediately segues into the wild track featuring galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The charm with this album is that the listener rarely exactly understand—nor wish to predict—where you is going to next."

Nearly each track ends at a totally different place from where it started. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame with a delicate orchestration before collapsing into digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's earlier rhythmic style begins off dark and sinister, featuring prowling vocals, until fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Art & Pop

A key achievement of Lux involves navigating the line between bold innovation and mainstream appeal. It is no surprise that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a suite of truly catchy hits. A song sung entirely in the English language swells on a chorus that feels to gather more and more infectious hooks while it spins upward. This trick is echoed on another expansive ballad that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural honesty of other breakup anthems, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing carry a painted-on smile, like a storybook figure hiding a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

Lux is pop on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for high Art amid of impending artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption for sublime elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its inherent excess. This is an abundant source of hidden treasure that takes patience to fully mine but never seem like a chore. While other big pop albums of 2025 seemed like feasting on scraps, Lux is a lavish banquet at which the guests at it, some tipsy on sacred drink, flit between conversations about ancient saints, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's most restlessly inventive visionary.
